Josep Borrell calls for renewed efforts

Brussels, 06/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - After his visit to Cyprus on 6 October, the President of the European Parliament, Josep Borrell, said there was an urgent need to seek a solution to the Cyprus problem and take a fresh approach. He said advantage must be taken of the window of opportunity provided by the launch of accession negotiations with Turkey to take 'new initiatives'. Since 1 May 2004, Greek and Turkish Cypriots have joined the same family, the European family, explains Borrell in a press release, pointing out that in the same family, people had to do their utmost to settle problems between family members. He said that what was missing in Cyprus was mutual trust and this would only return if contacts are immediately set up at all levels, including at the top.
