06/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - The German Christian Democrat Ewa Klamt has spoken out against the vote of the Parliamentary committee on civil liberties and home affairs on her report concerning "A Community Approach to the Management of Economic Migration" (to which EUROPE will return). By a small majority, she states in a press release, the Parliamentary committee has called for nationality to be granted to people who entered the EU illegally. Ms Klamt takes the view that the "mass legalisation" of illegal immigrants is no more than "capitulation": under these circumstances, "we may as well give up trying to fight illegal immigration", she said. Ms Klamt acknowledges that opening the EU up to "economic immigration is necessary in many places, but the citizens will only accept this if it goes hand-in-hand with an efficient fight against illegal immigration". Ms Klamt also expressed her displeasure at the fact that the majority of her colleagues (she points the finger at the Socialists and Greens in particular, but also the Liberals) took position in favour of granting voting rights in national elections throughout the EU to nationals of third countries. For regional and European elections, this is acceptable, but not for the elections to the national parliaments, she said.
