06/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Cicero Foundation of Maastricht is to hold a seminar on the subject of "The Role of Europol and Eurojust in the Fight against International Organised Crime" in Paris on 3 and 4 November, as part of its "Great Debates" series. On 3 November, debates will focus on: - co-operation between police forces in the EU, with Mariano German Simancas Carrion, deputy director of Europol, Joaquim Nunes de Almeida of the European Commission, Michael Niemeier from the German Ministry for the interior, and Cyrille Fijnaut, Professor of criminology at the universities of Tilburg in the Netherlands and of Louvain in Belgium. Workshops will discuss data protection and the transmission of data to third countries, the fight against money laundering, the protection of fundamental rights, border controls and the freedom of movement. On 4 November, work will focus on legal cooperation within the EU, and will be attended by François Falletti, a French member of Eurojust, and Daniel Bernard, the Belgian federal prosecutor, amongst others. Among the subjects tackled will be the effectiveness of the European arrest warrant, the role of liaison magistrates, the mutual recognition of decisions taken by national judges, and the protection of the rights of lawyers and suspects.
