06/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - In Le Monde of 6 October, when asked what he expects of the Informal Summit on 27 and 28 October at Hampton Court, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douzte-Blasy said: “I expect Mr Blair to find funding for enlargement. It's simply unbelievable, when one looks at the efforts made by Eastern European countries and we say no to them when they reach the negotiating table, because the English do not want to pay. France is putting EUR 12 billion more in the envelope until 2013. We ask everyone to do the same, including the English. Then, I expect there to be a broad debate on the European budget after 2013. We cannot continue not to differentiate between an euro invested for the future - higher education, research - and an euro for operating costs. Hence the discussion on social protection in Europe and business competitiveness (…). Europe must remain true to its values. We are not Chinese or Indians, we are Europeans with social humanism, but we must know what price we have to pay for competitiveness”.
