Brussels, 12/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Committee of the Regions (CoR)' 'Relex' committee (foreign affairs) is organising a debate in Paphos, Cyprus, on 15 September on local authorities' contribution to the emergence of multicultural society with an eye to the re-unification of Cyprus, chaired by Ramon Luis Valcarcel Siso (EPP, Spain). The main speakers include Cyprus interior minister Andreas Christou; MEP and former Cypriot foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulides (EPP); President of the Union of Cypriot Municipalities and Mayor of Limassol Dimitres Kontrides; Mayor of Paphos and Member of the CoR Fidias Sariakas (PES); Secretary General of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry Panayiotis Loizides; and Council of Europe rapporteur on Cyprus, Ian Micallef.
The participants will be adopting three opinions on 1) decentralised cooperation in the reform of the EU's development policy (rapporteur: Juliette Soulabaille, PES, France); 2) the framework programme on solidarity and flow management for 2007-2013 (rapporteur Christos Paleologos, PES, Greece); and 3) Kosovo's European future (rapporteur Thomaz Stebe, EPP, Slovenia).
