Brussels, 06/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - In the run-up to the UN's World Summit in New York on 14 - 16 September, the European Commission has launched an information campaign on the internet and through audiovisual spots to promote the EU's support to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to halve poverty by 2015.
The European Commission has launched a temporary website http://www.europe-cares.org and will show audiovisual 'spots' on major European airlines and on the TV news channel Euronews during September. The spots will be shown in 6 languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Polish) and feature themes such as health, education, poverty and environmental sustainability.
In New York, the EU's measures to substantially increase EU aid and aid delivery speed, paying particular attention to Africa, will be explained by the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, European Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel, European External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn.
In Brussels, before flying to New York, Louis Michel will be participating in a two-hour webchat on the EU's development policy and its contribution to the Millennium Development Goals. Questions can be posed live to the Commissioner between 18.00 hrs and 20.00 hrs on 12 September, or in advance to dev-webchat@cec.eu.int.
