THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/climate/german elections

06/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - A proportion of the general public seems to think that environmental issues are "1960s issues", but Hurricane Katrina showed us, all too tragically, that these are problems of today, Daniel Cohn-Bendit, co-president of the Greens/EFA group, told the press on Tuesday. These subjects are not being dealt with in the election debate in Germany, he said, while sending out this warning to the European Commission: if, when you revise the Lisbon strategy, you reduce the environmental dimension, you will be doing exactly what the United States has been doing for years!, exclaimed the German Green. In New Orleans, the State has shown that it is not capable of doing the job it is first and foremost there to do, which is "protecting the citizens", noted Mr Cohn-Bendit, criticising the Bush administration for not having "evacuated the poorest first".
