Hans-Gert Pottering calls for a debate on EU's future challenges, including demography, and for 'honesty' with Turkey

Brussels, 31/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the President of the EPP-ED group at the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pottering, said the great debate that is about to be launched on the fate of the European Constitution should be extended to all the challenges facing the EU in the future, particularly the demographic challenge, because European politicians have to ensure their children have a future. A genuine renewal and genuine reform is required and we have debate our values, our ideals and the human aspect of the European project, said the CDU MEP. One of the future challenges is EU enlargement, and Pottering admitted his group was divided between those who want Turkey to join the EU, and those who want the negotiations to begin but with other alternatives to full entry. Pottering said he himself agreed with the idea of a Privileged Partnership (supported in Germany by the CDU/CSU). He said honesty was needed with regard to Turkey and the EU. He added that following amendments to the Constitution, any new EU enlargement (not including Bulgaria and Romania) has to be ratified in France by referendum.
