THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/burma

31/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - A press release from Radio Free Asia (RFA) on 24 August reports on concerns by representatives of Burmese opposition groups, protesting at not being invited to the Wilton Park conference being organised on 4-5 September by the British Presidency of the Council of the EU. The conference will discuss the effectiveness of the current sanctions against the Burmese junta and will be a closed meeting, explains RFA. U. Lwin, Secretary and official spokesperson for the National Democracy League, says he recently met Michael Rider, a British official, who went to Burma to prepare for the conference, but Rider has not spoken about the Wilton Park conference, simply stating that Tony Blair intended to do something for Burma and would continue to do so in the future. Burmese democracy activists welcomed the idea of an informal discussion of the situation but are concerned about the people chosen to represent the Burmese democracy movement at the conference, notes Min Zin of RFA in the press release.
