Brussels, 01/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - Last Friday, the Commission authorised the purchase of Nokia's activities in professional Mobile radio-communication by European Aeronautic Defence and Space (EADS). The secure wireless radio systems are mainly used by the police and for commercial use by taxi companies and road transport companies, and by airports and sites used for sports competitions. EADS is present on the radio-communications market via its patented technology, TETRAPOL, whilst Nokia's offer is based on the open standard TETRA. Despite "relatively high" cumulative market shares, the Commission's investigation pointed to the existence of "sufficient competitive pressure", particularly from companies such as Motorola or OTE/Finmeccanica. It is the tendering procedures which govern the functioning of the market for professional Mobile radio-communications, offering clients "not inconsiderable purchasing power", the Commission concluded.
