EU prepares to send observers to monitor peace agreement with Aceh rebels

Brussels, 19/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EU will probably send observers to monitor implementation of the peace agreement between the Indonesian government and rebels in the province of Aceh, initialled on Sunday under the auspices of the former President of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari. At their Council meeting in Brussels on Monday, the EU's foreign ministers welcomed the agreement, saying that the EU was prepared, in principle, to provide observers to monitor implementation of the agreement. In its conclusions document, the Council urged the relevant Council bodies to prepare for an observer mission, should it be decided. The conclusions document explains that EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, indicated that the mission might involve 200 observers working in close collaboration with ASEAN Member States. A spokesperson for Solana said that if all went well, they would be ready to send observers as soon as the agreement is signed. Solana will be travelling to Jakarta next week. The Indonesian government and the Aceh rebels are expected to sign the peace agreement in Helsinki on 15 August. Some 15,000 people have been killed since the launch of the separatist guerrilla movement in 1976.
