Brussels, 11/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 6 July, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted an interim Resolution on Romania's implementation of the ruling of May 200 by the European Court of Human Rights in the Rotaru case. This ruling explains that Romanian law does not adequately set out limits for respect by the national authorities when intelligence affecting the security of the country is gathered, classified or archived. It also points out that Romanian law does not allow interested parties to oppose the detention by intelligence services of data on their private life or refute the veracity of this information. Romania has already adopted measures for including new violations of this order and is setting up a legal inspection procedure on secret surveillance measures. Nonetheless, the committee has called on the Romanian authorities to rapidly adopt other legislative reform necessary for responding to criticism made by the European Court.
