Brussels, 11/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has sent reasoned opinions to Denmark, Luxembourg, Portugal, Cyprus and the Czech Republic for failure to transpose the directive on vehicle registration papers (Council Directive 1999/37/EC of 29 April 1999), now that the deadline of 1 June is past. The directive in question, which harmonises the presentation and the content of vehicle registration certificates, contributes to improving road safety, by allowing controls regarding the driver's ability to drive a certain category of vehicle, and by making certificates more understandable for officials not speaking the language in which the papers are made out. It also contributes to the correct functioning of the internal market by facilitating the renewed circulation of vehicles previously registered in another Member State. The above five States have two months before the Commission continues with its infringement proceedings.
