Brussels, 23/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The parliamentary committee on economic affairs has adopted the report by Laszlo Becsey (EPP-ED, Hungary) on the Commission's proposals aimed at simplifying value added tax (VAT) statements, by establishing a one-stop shop system, which is electronic and optional, and which would allow companies with crossborder activities to meet their obligations only in the Member Sates where they are established (see EUROPE 8821). MEPs have adopted amendments that will make minor changes to the Commission's proposals, aimed above all at reducing translation-related obstacles for SMEs, keeping documents linked to VAT statements in the Member State where the company is set up, and paying companies directly in the bank account of the country of origin. Public consultation in 2003 revealed that companies and tax administrations are in favour of a one-stop shop system but refuse overall harmonisation of VAT obligations.
