Brussels, 23/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, is to go to Africa on 24 June on a four-day trip to South Africa, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo, a press release announces. According to the release, in the run up to the G8 Summit early July in Gleneagles in Scotland, at which Africa will be one of the priorities, the president of the Commission plans to be “sufficiently prepared to convince global fund donors of the need to invest far more on the African continent in order to improve the situation at commercial, security, educational and cultural level”. During a recent meeting of the European Parliament Committee on Development, the Commission's representative had given his assurance that Mr Barroso would seize the opportunity provided by his visit to South Africa to ask President Mbeki to put pressure on the Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe).
