Anne-Marie Sigmund welcomes adoption of guiding principles for sustainable development

Brussels, 23/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Despite the disappointment with the results of the European Summit of 16-17 June, the president of the Economic and Social Committee (EESC) Anne-Marie Sigmund, welcomed the adoption of the guiding principles for sustainable development, describing them as a 'silver lining'. She also affirmed that “with the adoption of these guiding principles the Heads of State or Government have demonstrated that they are nevertheless capable of giving Europe …leadership…Europe's future depends on a sustainable vision, and these guidelines lay the foundations for that.' She is launching an appeal to the Commission and British presidency “to take up and further develop the guiding principles for sustainable development in the review of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy to which the Committee attaches high importance”. She made a specific appeal to the Commission to build on the views already expressed by civil society and to propose a reviewed Strategy for adoption by the European Council in 2006.
