Brussels, 23/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - In Brussels on 16 June, Norauto presented to the "Norauto European Prize of Road Safety", under the patronage of Jacques Barrot, European Commissioner for Transport. Norauto also launched a Practical European Guide, entitled "Mieux Circuler en Europe" (Better Driving in Europe). The ceremony was preceded by a debate on projects undertaken at Community level in terms of road safety. "It is important to generalise best practice and to ensure that life is made as easy as possible for drivers by harmonising rules and safety mechanisms", said Olivier Melis, Director General of the Norauto group. Pierre-Antoine Ullmo, Director of P.A.U. Education, noted that harmonisation and networking are slow processes, which must be complemented by other measures aiming to develop voluntary behaviour. With a view to doing this, the Vatanen report on the action programme 2003-2010 of the European Commission, which is currently being discussed at the European Parliament, recommends measures such as multiplying this type of concrete initiative and publicising them more (EUROPE 8973).
