Brussels, 03/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Discussions between the EU and Jordan will be opened on 5 and 6 June in Amman on human rights, governance and democracy, and on justice and security affairs. Jordan is the first country to have implemented an “action plan” in the context of Neighbourhood Policy, and, as such, two thematic sub-committees will evoke the institutional framework of the policy for promoting democracy, human rights and the freedom of expression, above all freedom of the media. The roles of the civil society and of women will also be looked at, as will the question of the death penalty. The sub-committee on justice is expected to discuss police cooperation, especially in the fight against organised crime, drug trafficking and sources of terrorist funding. In the social sphere, a working group in Amman on 7 June will be entrusted with the task of covering cooperation in social rights, standards relevant to working conditions and gender discrimination. It will also look at employment policy and reduction of poverty as well as migratory policies, asylum and visa issuance in Europe.
