Unemployment stable at 8.9% in euro zone and EU25

Brussels, 03/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - According to Eurostat, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the euro zone was 8.9% in April 2005 and therefore remains stable compared to March but also compared to April 2004. The EU25 unemployment rate also remained unchanged in April compared to March at 8.9% (it was 9% in April 2004). In April this year, the lowest rates were recorded in Ireland (4.2%), the United Kingdom (4.5% in February), Luxembourg and Austria (4.6%), while the highest rates were observed in Poland (17.9%), Slovakia (15.6%) and Greece (10.2%). Over one year (April 2004 to April 2005), fourteen Member States recorded a fall in their unemployment rate. The largest relative falls were noted in Lithuania (from 11.3% to 8.5%), Estonia (from 9.7% to 7.9%), Slovakia (from 18.7% to 15.6%) and Denmark (from 5.5% to 4.9%). On the other hand, nine Member States noted a rise in their unemployment rate over one year, and the largest relative increases were in Portugal (from 6.5% to 7.2%), Luxembourg (from 4.2% to 4.6%) and the Netherlands (from 4.6% to 5.0%). Furthermore, over one year, the unemployment rate for men went from 7.5% to 7.7% in the euro zone and fell from 8.1% to 8% in the EU25, while the unemployment rate for women fell from 10.6% to 10.5% in the euro zone and from 10.2% to 10.1% in the EU25. In April this year, the rate of unemployment for those aged under 25 rose to 18.9% in the euro zone and to 19.0% in the EU25 compared to 18.4% and 19.1% respectively in April 2004. For those under 25, the lowest rates were noted in Denmark (7.2%), Ireland (7.9%) and the Netherlands (9.2%), and the highest rates were noted in Poland (36.1%), Slovakia (27.1%) and Greece (26.2%). Furthermore, according to Eurostat, nearly 13 million men and women were unemployed in the euro zone and 19.3 million in EU25 in April 2005 (the rate was 5.2% in the United States and 4.4% in Japan).
