03/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - Cérame-Unie, the liaison office in Brussels of the European ceramics industry, gives its full support to Commission actions for indicating the origin on ceramic articles (table- and ornamental-ware and ceramic wall and floor tiles, etc.) imported into the EU. According to Cérame-Unie, the introduction of the “made in” indication is to curtail counterfeiting which causes enormous problems for the European ceramics industry. In its press release, Cérame-Unie stresses that it represents around 2,000 firms throughout Europe, with a total turnover of EUR 27 billion, and employs 220,000. Also, in regions such as Stoke-on-Trent (UK), northern Bavaria (Germany), Limoges (France), Catalonia (Spain) and Sassuolo (Italy, the ceramics industry is by far the largest employer.
