03/06/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided to allocate two million EUR of emergency humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka. The funds, which will come from the ECHO budget, are intended to: - help new returnees to restart their livelihood after having been displaced to the North of the country; - finance aid to vulnerable displaced people living in welfare centres; - provide nutritional support to women and children exiled to refugee camps in Tamil Nadu in India. The decision brings the amount of aid provided by ECHO to people in Sri Lanka since the 2002 ceasefire to 24 million EUR.
