31/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Union des Federalistes Europeens-Belgique, chaired by Michele Ciavarini Azzi, is organising a public debate in Waterloo (outside Brussels) on 2 June in cooperation with PROMEURO and the Ligue europeenne de cooperation economique on 'The European Constitutional Treaty and Economic Governance'. Speakers include Belgian finance minister Didier Reynders and the President of the EP's Economic and Monetary Committee Pervenche Beres. In a report prepared for the conference, the organisers note various areas where the Constitution makes progress, but criticise it for failing to balance the monetary policy (federalised in the eurozone) with the economic policy (the responsibility of national authorities). They also note that persistent competition between three major socio-economic approaches - Anglo-Saxon liberalism, Scandinavian equal opportunities and the Rhine model of equality of outcome -hampers fiscal harmonisation.
