Summit focuses on bilateral political dialogue, preparing for UN Summit and dialogue with civil society

Luxembourg, 27/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - At the 4th joint EU-Mexico Council in Luxembourg on 26 May (in the framework of the 12th ministerial meeting of the Rio Group), co-chaired by Luxembourg's foreign minister and acting President of the Council of the EU, Jean Asselborn, and his Mexican counterpart Ernesto Derbez Bautista, Europeans and Mexicans focussed on bilateral political issues, international matters like preparing for the UN Summit in New York in September, and dialogue with civil society. In terms of cooperation, the European Commission outlined the main factors it is considering in a revised EU approach to Mexico, taking account of progress in the overall bilateral agreement, explains a joint press release. The approach aims to define and adopt better cooperation to match Mexico's level of development and its current international role, explains the press release. During the meeting, the EU reiterated its support for strengthening social cohesion in Mexico. On trade, Europeans and Mexicans alike welcomed the recent adoption of a special protocol on customs cooperation to strengthen cooperation under the Free Trade Agreement (FTA). In this connection, the parties discussed progress in the negotiations over review clauses for farming, investment and services under the FTA. Both sides welcomed the outcome of the 28 January - 1 February forum between Mexican and EU civil society and government. The next meeting of the joint EU-Mexico Council will take place in the first six months of 2007 and an EU-Mexico Summit will be held in Vienna in May 2006.
