19/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The proposals of German Social Democrat Evelyne Gebhardt for the “services” directive are not at all to the taste of Joachim Wuermeling (EPP-ED, Germany). In a press release, the CSU MEP argues that his colleague's ideas are “not so practical”, especially that of replacing the principle of country of origin with that of mutual recognition: he feels that this could create a “bureaucratic monster” (see EUROPE 8930). Mr Wuermeling also feels that Ms Gebhardt's proposed definition for services of general interest is not clear, and that if it is applied as it stands, “the directive will be nothing more than a series of exceptions”.
