International Energy Agency wants more liberalisation in Turkey

Brussels, 19/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The International Energy Agency (IEA) welcomed the measures taken by Turkey for liberalising its energy markets but called on the country to go further. With an all-encompassing liberalisation in sight, the IEA 2005 report on energy policy in Turkey appreciates the 2001 law on the electricity and natural gas markets but contains some points of criticism. The IEA therefore states that it is concerned by the fact that parts of hydro-electric energy remains in government hands, given the special role of state enterprises and the difficulty for private companies to obtain market access. The report underlines that “only 29% of the market is free to choose suppliers”. The IEA explains that in gas, 80% of the market can in theory choose its supplier but the national BOTAS company has a de facto monopoly. The agency also denounced coal subsidies as unfair. It also calls on Turkey to pay more attention to energy efficiency and the fight against pollution.
