Brussels, 14/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission hopes to be able to take a decision on opening an investigation into the massive imports of textile products from China on 25 April, as a first step towards possible safeguard measures authorised by Geneva in the context of the treaty for China's accession to the WTO (see EUROPE 8922 and other article today). Claude Veron-Reville, the spokesman for Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson, confirmed that the Commission awaited reliable information during the week of 18 April in order to be able to measure the pressure of Chinese textile imports on the Community market since the abolition of quotas on 1 January this year. Peter Mandelson was to receive the decision-makers of the French and Italian textile industry on Thursday afternoon.
