THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/un/germany

11/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - According to the Financial Times Deutschland of 11 April, a spokesperson for the Auswärtiges Amt has confirmed that Germany, which aspires to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has the long-term objective of a seat on the UN Security Council for the EU. The German daily newspaper Der Spiegel states that the German government, if the Member States of the EU support their entry onto the Security Council as a permanent member, would be inclined to transform the German seat into a European seat within around fifteen years, as part of UN reform. In addition to this, Germany would be prepared to welcome representatives of other EU Member States in its delegation to the UN.
