THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/commission/constitution

11/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - I do not see the European Constitution as an 'anti-social' text, said the Vice-President of the European Commission Margot Wallström last week in Brussels at the Socialist and Social Democratic meeting in support of a 'yes' vote in the referendum in France (EUROPE 8924). The Constitution, the European Commissioner points out: - refers to full employment and social progress; - includes combating social exclusion and discrimination among the objectives of the EU; - makes legal provisions for the promotion of equal treatment of women and men, solidarity between generations and the protection of the rights of the child; - includes commitments to social dialogue involving trade unions and the establishment of t a Tripartite Social Summit; - includes the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which notably contains binding commitments on fair and just working conditions and social security rights. The Social Platform see the Charter as a major step forward and the major environmental NGOs acknowledge that the Constitution contains progress on sustainable development, Ms Wallström emphasised.
