11/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of International Roma Day, which took place on 8 April, the President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell declared in a message that the EP would continue to give the Roma “all support needed for their full and complete integration in the EU”. “The 8 million Roma are too often faced with serious discrimination. The EU must fight against the destitution in which a large number of them live. I am thinking particularly of their access to education; to healthcare and to housing”, he said, deeming the terrible situation in which many Roma live to be “in contradiction to the fundamental values of the EU”. Last week, Mr Borrell received a delegation from the European Roma and Travellers Forum (see EUROPE 8923).
