EuroMed conference on “economic transition”

Brussels, 11/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - A EuroMediterranean conference on “economic transition” was held in Brussels on Monday and Tuesday under the aegis of the European Commission. Invited to launch the debate at this periodical exercise in global dialogue on macroeconomic, financial and trade prospects in the EuroMed process were the former Moroccan Trade Minister Hassan Abu Ayoub and the Director of the Syrian Plan Abdallah Dardari. The experts and senior civil servants from the Member States of the EuroMed process, meeting in three workshops, were called upon to debate a series of issues: “Has the Barcelona process lived up to its promise?”; “The impact of dismantling tariffs on trade flows”; “Effectiveness of aid”; “Neighbourhood policy: what's new?”; “Sharing prosperity”: the direction to follow; Conditions for free movement of capital and investment. Tuesday will mainly be devoted to discussion of reform, regional integration, agricultural trade, free movement of people, managing migratory flows and civil liberties. The conference is due to finish with a presentation by the UNDP of the annula report “Towards Freedom in the Arab World”.
