Brussels, 04/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Presidents of the political groups at the European Parliament have unanimously agreed to the suggestion by President Borrell to publish a declaration on the journalists being held hostage in Iraq. In the declaration, endorsed after the meeting of the President of the European Parliament with managers of the French and Italian media companies whose journalists have been kidnapped in Iraq, and the association 'Reporters sans frontières', the Presidents of the political groups adopted a declaration (to be read by Josep Borrell at the opening of the plenary in Strasbourg on 7 March) in which the Conference of Presidents calls for the release of all journalists held hostage in Iraq and the release of all other hostages. It urges the European institutions, all governments and territorial authorities to take action to ensure the release of Giuliana Sgrena (Il Manifesto) and Florence Aubenas and her guide and interpreter Hanoun al-Saadi (Libération), and to decide to post their pictures at the European Parliament premises; believing that there is 'no democracy without freedom of information' and all resources must be mobilised to ensure the media can fulfil their task, particularly in areas of armed conflict.
