Conversion aid for tobacco producers

Brussels, 11/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission on Friday adopted a regulation fixing the provisional sum per Member State for aid from the “Community Tobacco Fund” dedicated to conversion activities for producers leaving the sector. The budget is going up in 2005 to 14.4 million euros: 12.6 million for Greece, 843 000 for Italy, 386 000 for Portugal, 196 000 for Belgium, 181 000 for Spain, 110 000 for France, 449 000 for Germany and just over 2000 euros for Austria. This distribution takes account of the level of production quotas definitively repurchased and the national guaranteed thresholds. Total resources available under the Community Tobacco Fund for 2005 will go up to 28.8 million euros, 50% of which will be allocated for converting tobacco producers to other crops or economic activities which create employment.
