11/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 10 February in Kiev at a conference on “Ukraine, EU, Russia: Challenges and Opportunities for New Relations” MEP Jan Marinus Wiersma (PSE, Netherlands) appealed for increased EU support for democratisation in Ukraine, although stating that “focussing the debate on membership of the EU (…) is not necessarily the most fruitful strategy for the moment”. In his view, the way forward is “in Kiev, not in Brussels”.
