European radio broadcasters clarify their positions on public service missions

Brussels, 01/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - Representatives from public radio and television channels ARD and ZDF and the BBC, United Kingdom, France (France Téléviusion), Italy (RAI), Spain (RTVE), as well as the EBU, the European Broadcasters Union, adopted during their meeting in Madrid on 24 January a declaration on radio broadcasting in Europe. In this “Madrid Declaration'”, they highlighted that major role played by public broadcasters for deepening European integration the pro-active approach of the EBU and its members in supporting the public services, the need for public broadcasting to be in tune with new initiatives on terrestrial digital broadcasting, the need to provide a general public service through all broadcasting channels, including new digital platforms, the crucial importance of guaranteeing stable and long term funding that would allow the implementation of public service missions.
