Brussels, 31/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - As usual, MEPs are calling for the European Union to present a series of resolutions at the United Nations Human Rights Committee (soon holding its 61st session in Geneva) on the situation in several countries, as well as resolutions on economic, social, cultural and civil rights. The foreign affairs committee presided by Elmar Brok are specifically pinpointing: Iran, for executions and public floggings and repression of the press and media; Iraq for executions and hostage taking and the re-introduction of the death penalty; China for arbitrary detentions and repression, particularly in Tibet and Xinjinag but also against its political repression of the opposition and Falung Gong; Chechnya for the Beslan massacre (but at the same time Maps are condemning “crime against humanity” committed by the Russian authorities”); Afghanistan, for human rights violations, hostage taking and the execution of hostages (although Maps consider that the new government in Kabul should be helped); Sudan, for violence and forced displacements of civilians; the USA concerning the Guantanamo Bay prisoners.
