Brussels, 31/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, Francoise Le Bail, spokesperson for the President of the scam, Jose Manuel Barroso, said Barroso praised Iraqis who had dared to go and vote on Sunday. The day of the Iraqi elections, 30 January, the first elections in 50 years, was a 'great day' that sent out a 'strong signal' of Iraqis' commitment to democratic values and a step towards democracy and stability in Iraq said Jose Manuel Barroso. He hoped the elected government would act for all Iraqis, representing all the different communities, and the Interim Assembly would ensure all Iraqi voices are heard, particularly when it comes to drawing up the Constitution. The European Commission is prepared to work with the elected Iraqi leaders, said Le Bail. She said the Commission had provided EUR 31.5 mil in aid for preparing the elections, and total EU funding for Iraq totalled EUR 320 mil from the end of 2003 to the end of 2004, in addition to which some EUR 200 mil has been earmarked for reconstruction in Iraq (see Europe of 29 January, p.9).
