31/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - German interior minister Otto Schily criticised his Spanish counterpart on Saturday for having launched a vast operation for providing papers for illegal immigrants, without having consulted the interior ministries of the 25. He said that if some countries wanted to provide papers for illegals, they had to look at the situation in other countries and that the Spanish decision affected other countries. The Spanish Secretary of State Antonio Camacho defended his programme for regularising illegals, which would be launched on 7 February and which could affect 1 million people. He asserted that this was an “intelligent” exercise as the people in question were already integrated and working (therefore the employers would have to make the demand for papers).
