31/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - In view of the EU/Uzbekistan Cooperation Council on 1 February, Amnesty International has written to the Luxembourg presidency calling for it to take a more robust approach towards Uzbekistan, which Amnesty describes as “now the only executioner in Central Asia”. The NGO points out that around 50 people were sentenced to death last year in Uzbekistan, whereas Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan had introduced a moratorium on the death penalty.
