THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/middle east

10/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Luisa Morgatini, President of the European Parliament Committee on Development has written to Javier Solana, President Borrell, Michel Rocard (Head of the EU election observation mission to the Palestinian Territories) and Edward McMillan-Scott (Head of the EP election observation mission to the Palestinian Territories) to urge them to exert pressure on Israel to respect its promise to do everything possible to ensure the success of the election of the future President of the Palestinian Authority, "specifically regarding freedom of movement". Noting that candidate Mustapha Barghouti, leader of the Al Mubadara movement, had been arrested and beaten along with his assistant by Israeli soldiers between Jenin and Nablus, Ms Morgatini expressed her concern at seeing that one of the candidates "can be stopped twice in a week by the Israeli soldiers, and therefore prevented from visiting different Palestinian cities", which she should be free to do as an election candidate.
