Seven MEPs take part in observer mission for presidential elections in Mozambique

Brussels, 02/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - A delegation of MEPS sent by the EU is in Maputo to take part in an observer mission during the presidential elections. "We are here to give our support to the electoral process", the head of the delegation, Glenys Kinnock, British Labour member and co-President of the ACP/EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, said upon arrival. Ms Kinnock was impressed by the effort of reconciliation made by all parties since the end of the war, and sees these elections as "an opportunity to pursue the construction of sound democracy, which is needed for stability and security". She said she felt very encouraged by the active campaign that has been carried out, and by the widespread participation in the process. The seven MEPs will monitor the way the elections unfold and the vote-counting in Maputo, Beira and Nampula.
