Brussels, 02/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Turkey has forwarded a document to the Dutch EU Council Presidency in response to a first draft of conclusions for the European Council on 16/17 December, discussed this week by Coreper (EUROPE of 1 December, p.5, and yesterday, p.5). In this document, Ankara sets out its main expectations for the EU summit, it was stated on Tuesday by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gül. According to the minister, cited by AFP, the document explains that Turkey is not ready to recognise the Republic of Cyprus until a solution to the problem of the island's division has been found. The Turkish government also calls for a "clear date" for the start of accession talks, "leaving no room for second thoughts and containing no conditions", Mr Gül told the press. "Another very important point is that the negotiation process should be sustainable and the perspective of full membership also should be very clearly declared", he stressed. "There should be no doubt about this", Mr Gül said.
