17/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - Commenting on the results of Tuesday's "Culture" Council on the audiovisuals sector, the German Christian Democrat Ruth Hieronymi stated in a press release that the European directive on television is "outmoded", because for one thing, it does not yet cover new digital technology (see above). The 1997 directive is "fit for a museum", said the CDU Member of the European Parliament, pointing out that the European Parliament has called several times for this directive to be revised in recent years, but that the Member States have blocked this, "due to fears of excessive European regulations". After the discussion which took place within the Council, by initiative of Germany, we hope that the impetus has now been given in the right direction, concluded Ms Hieronymi.
