Brussels, 08/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - European small and medium-sized enterprises find the recommendations made by Wim Kok on mid-term review of the Lisbon strategy "too broad, too weak". In a press release, Paul Reckinger, UEAPME President, admits: "We are disappointed by the report. On the one hand it rightly recognises the need to focus on economic growth but on the other hand its recommendations do not support it as much as we would have liked". In particular, Mr Reckinger reproaches the proposals for being too geared to the needs of large enterprise while neglecting SMEs, although the latter generate more jobs in the EU. This is mainly true for measures concerning R&D and Innovation, which are focused on the "high tech segment of the market", he deplores. He trusts that the Member States will finally apply the vital measures to encourage growth, including by facilitating SME access to funding.
