29/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a communiqué released on Friday, the President of the Union of European Federalists, German Social Democrat Jo Leinen welcomed the signing of the constitutional treaty, calling it a “symbol of the way towards the political unity of Europe,” but at the same time indicating that he saw this new European Constitution as only a first step in this direction. The president of the European Parliament's Constitutional Committee pointed out that there was room for improvement on a number of points (the CFSP, the CSDP and the multiannual financial programme were among those he named). Jo Leinen called for the convocation of a convention to revise this constitution in 2008 at the latest.
