Strasbourg, 29/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday parliament adopted a resolution on the Ukrainian presidential elections taking place on 31 October. MEPs voiced some concerns about the lacklustre process of reform, which leaves a lot to be desired, as well as the disappointing electoral campaign. The common resolution underlines the difficulties experienced by some of the candidates with regard to access to the media, including a certain amount of warm twisting and intimidation, particularly from the state. In this electoral phase, they “sharply condemn the violent aggression and discrimination” perpetrated by the secret services, in particular against the student group “Pora” and its members. MEPs welcome, on the other hand, “the commitment made by the Ukrainian government to allow national and international observers to monitor the elections”. At the request of the Ukrainian opposition, Ari Vatenen (EPP/Ed/France) to visit Ukraine as an observer during the elections.
