Brussels, 29/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - A meeting at expert level focussing on transport in the Mediterranean took place in Brussels on 27 October. This meeting, the third of its kind, took place as part of the Euro-Mediterranean transport forum inaugurated as part of the Barcelona process, which will meet in Brussels on 15 and 16 December. This working group dealt with developments in terms of EU policy and legislation in the fields of maritime policy, maritime safety, short sea shipping and ports. Detailed exchanges of views have taken place on this subject. The Commission has announced that two training seminars will be held as part of the Euromed Transport programme, one on maritime safety and that of port installations, probably in Malta in late January, and the other on ports early next year. The concept of "sea motorways" was raised and debated. The Commission stressed that the provisional programme for the neighbourhood policy for 2004-2006, which obtained the green light from the MED committee, provides for the funding of activities relative to maritime safety and short sea shipping.
