Commission opposed to Community aid for fishermen affected by hike in diesel prices

Brussels, 19/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - During Monday's Fisheries Council in Luxembourg, the European Commission came out against France' request for a long-term Community mechanism for granting public aid to the fisheries sector should fuel prices continue. French concerns, however, were supported by several other Member States: Spain, Greece, Portugal and Belgium and opposed by the United Kingdom which called on Member States to respect rules on state aid so that competition was...
