Brussels, 15/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in Brussels at the end of September, the International Earth Observation Group hailed progress in the establishment of a coordination system for all earth observation systems. If negotiations continue at this pace in the next few months, the official launch of a ten year programme to establish the new GEOSS system (Global Earth Observation Strategy System) will be held in February 2005, during the third Earth Observation Summit in Brussels. GEOSS is described by the European Commission as a revolutionary new system for increasing understanding of the earth which will have vast repercussions on climatology, the environment and health. Director General of Research at the European Commission and Co-President of the Earth Observation Group, Achilleas Mitsos, said the system concerned the health and safety of the future citizens of planet earth.
