Spain must not flout shark finning rules

Brussels, 11/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Liberal Group at the European Parliament considers that Spain flouts Community rules on shark fishing, according to a press release on Friday. Under EU regulations adopted by the Council in June 2003 to tackle shark finning on board fishing vessels or the off-loading of shark fins, the Member States must present an annual report to the European Commission by 1 May at the latest on implementation of these provisions during the previous year. Spain has still not presented the report five months after the buffer date set, an attitude considered unacceptable by Elspeth Attwooll (ALDE, Britain), who had been rapporteur on the subject (EUROPE of 1 April 2003). Ms Attwooll called on the DG Fisheries at the European Commission to approach the Spanish government to make this violation of Community law stop.
