THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/turkey

05/10/2004 (Agence Europe) - The German Social Democrat Jo Leinen, the president of the European Parliament's Constitutional Committee, said that by negotiating Turkey's accession to the EU, Europe would gain in security and stability. A young population like Turkey's would "breathe new life" into the Union, he said, adding that "in 2015, Turkey's accession could well prove to be an intelligent decision for the future of the European continent". However, CSU MEP Angelika Niebler condemned the cancelled appearance of the Turkish ambassador to the EU before the Committee on Women's Rights of the EP (the ambassador was represented by another diplomat, excusing his absence with many obligations before the fateful date of 6 October). According to Ms Niebler, this means that the ambassador has no respect for the parliamentary committee, "either that or he was not too sure" about the dossier he would have had to discuss, i.e. ones on the situation for women in Turkey.
